A short history of the Ansonia Fire Department for you all.

Ansonia and West Ansonia (the lands west of the Naugatuck River) was originally part of the Town (now city) of Derby. Derby's fire department which was founded in 1830 protected the Ansonia's for many years after their settlement.

In 1871, the industrial borough of Ansonia needed fire protection and residents organized the Ansonia Hose Company No. 1 but after purchaising a hose carraige with the name "Eagle Hose Co." and the number 6 eteched on the lanters the comapny was renamed the Eagle Hose Company No. 6. The new comapny was funded by the borough of Ansonia and was separate from Derby's department. In 1879 the company received a hook and ladder (no aerial) wagon and was renamed the Eagle Hose & Hook & Ladder Company No. 6

In 1875, residents in West Ansonia still relied on the Derby fire companies for fire protection but were still very far out for the old hand drawn and horse drawn trucks of the day, formed the West Ansonia Fire District. The following year, the first fire company, the West Ansonia Hose Company No. 1 was organized and changed their name shortly after to the Fountain Hose Company No. 1.

IN 1889, the borough of Ansonia successfully petitioned the State of Connecticut to become the 168th township in the state and separated from Derby with the new town annexing West Ansonia. The Eagle Hose and Fountain Hose remained separate fire districts and when the eastside installed the first Gamewell system, West Ansonia paid to be hooked into the new fire alarm system. In 1893 Ansonia was re-incorporated a city and the West Ansonia Fire District was merged into the eastside district creating the City of Ansonia Fire Department and both companies kept their traditional names.

Later in 1894, a group of residents in the city's third ward (southeast lands) began organizing a fire comapny and in 1897 the Webster Hose Company No. 3 was organized, taking their name from Mayor Erwin Webster who was in office at the time. In 1903, the company received a hook & ladder wagon and became the Webster Hose, Hook & Ladder Company No. 3. The company also received its first emergency truck in the 1940's the predecessor to today's squad truck.

In 1909, a group of men from the southern end of West Ansonia, the city's fourth ward, founded the Fourth Ward Association and discussed about converting the club into another fire company. They gained the aid and support of Mayor Stephen Charters who hailed from West Ansonia since childhood when the area was still part of Derby. On May 5th, 1909 the organization changed its name to the Fourth Ward Fire Club showing intentions on becoming a fire company. On February 13th, 1911 the Fourth Ward Fire Club was incorporated by the city and the following month became the Fourth Ward Fire Company No. 4. On April 21st, 1911 the comapny changed their name to honor Mayor Charters' efforts helping them organize and became the Charters Hose Company No. 4.

The Hilltop area of the city began to grow after WWII and many new homes were being build on the old farm lands. In 1956 residents from this area organized the Hilltop Hose Company No. 5 and were independent from the city fire department for many years. The comapny was originally located at the old Ansonia Airport of of Ford Street, near the old Nike site before moving to their present Pulaski Highway building, once owned by Hilltop Eastside Civic Association. The comapny reorganized in the 1960's and around 1965 were incorporated into the Ansonia Fire Department.

Just remember, the area was never called Birmingham, It was Derby from 1654 when the Elm Street area was first settled by those English folk from New Haven and Milford.

Birmingham, aka West Derby, was originally called Smithville after Sheldon Smith until Anson Greene Phelps and Sheldon agreed to call the village Birmingham in 1834ish.

Ansonia ("Latanized" version of Anson) was founded in 1844 and West Ansonia short after that. And East Derby was referenced for a while a old Derby id I'm not mistaken since the old docks used to be were trh tressle now stands and the "David Humphrys House" area was also originally known as Uptown when Ansonia and Derby were still together.

If you want to know more we'll me up one night. My history degree didn't go to waste!!!!!! LOL
