Rescue 2 is scheduled be be in service before the end of this year. Bids just opened for 3 new pumpers and 2 new ladders to be delivered in 2010. I saw the bid sheet at E29/L11 Thursday night. As for the low profile ladders, as far as I know they're scheduled to be assigned to Ladder 25 (almost 100% certain) and Ladder 6
pumper bids went to kme

Rescue 2 will be in service any day now. As far as I know it is at HQ. Ladder 6 is definately at HQ and will go into service any day now. Engines 21 & 24 are receiving new E-One pumpers, they are currently at Greenwood I believe. Ladder 24 is receiving the other new E-One ladder, that is due to the fact that the Aid To Firefighters Grant we received HAS to be used on Ladder 24. I believe that Ladder 24's current piece will be referbed and assigned to Ladder 25, but who knows?

Not sure what the next year's budget looks like yet. Still have quite a few older trucks in need of replacement (Ladders 4, 14, 19, 21, 23, 25 & 29). Probably take 3-4 years.

You are very observant to spot that. I wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't pointed it out. I see what you mean when I went back and looked at the picture and compared the '10s and '09's.
I know there are a lot of options with those cabs related to length, height, number and arrangement of jump seats, storage cabinets, etc. On my former dept, the last new Pierce before I "retired" had the raised roof. While it did offer a little more head room and made getting in and out of the back easier, I always found the standard height to be more than adequate.

The specification was changed between 2009 & 2010 to reduce the height of the rigs, which was deemed more important due to the age and size of many of our houses. As I'm sure you remember Ladder 11 got Ladder 1's Pierce instead of a brand new E-One because the new E-One wouldn't fit in E29/L11's quarters due to the slope of the apron. The new Ladder 6 & 24 are now 10'11", which is what we'd need in order to fit under the Soldiers Field Road bridges as well. I believe the 2008-09 models were closer to 11'4".

I dont like the look of the long cab, but hey, its about functionality and duribility, not looks. Maybe its just me, but aside from the notched out roof, it looks as though the cab either sits on the frame a couple inches lower, or is just outright a couple inches lower. If thats the case, I can definately see going with the long cab as it makes up for the lack of space in the rear. Wouldnt want you guys riding around feeling like your stuffed in like sardines right!!!

Along with pics of Engines 21 & 24 and Ladder 6. All should be in the field this month. Ladder 24 arrived from Ocala within the past couple of weeks.

For the last 20 years, Time decided which company received a new piece. With larger apparatus and no new firehouses in decades, size has been a determining factor. But latest rumor has the new apparatus going to the busier companies with their used vehicles cascading down to the slower companies. This unfortunately leads to not taking care of a truck because you know you'll get a new one anyway. Kinds like the Guard getting the active Army's used crap.

No tiller.....I repeat, NO TILLER!!! There was a plan, several times, to get one or two, but every time it was about to come to frution, it fell apart for whatever reason. Thats why L24 is about to get their new piece. The grant that was applied for by Boston Fire was specifically to get a tiller for L24. But when that plan fell apart for a number of different reasons, from training to builder to cost etc., the Feds allowed the city to keep the grant money to buy a rearmount...as long as it went to L24. Hense the reason they are getting a new truck soon.
So in essence, the tiller idea is on life support AT BEST. Its pretty much dead, but you never know if it will creap up again sometime in the future. But for now, you wont see a tillered aerial riding the streets of Boston.
