"Deadliest Catch" Captain Phil Harris is reportedly in a coma after undergoing 12 hours of surgery Sunday night.

The Seattle-based skipper of the Cornelia Marie, who suffered a stroke on Friday, was placed under a medically-induced coma to reduce brain swelling, TMZ reports.

Just found an other article that he came out of the medically induced coma on Feb. 3rd. The stroke happened on Jan. 30th.

Lake-Sumter EMS here in Florida is experimenting with the induced hypothermia treatment on revived cardiac arrest patients where the core body temperature is progessively lowered (chilled IV fluids and cooling blankets, etc) to help prevent brain damage. This protocol is continued in the ER and hospital. Not sure if it would be the same for CVA though.

Boston EMS has been doing therapeutic hypothermia for cardiac arrests with ROSC for about 2 years now as well. The results look promising.

Thanks for the response and information! I'm not sure exactly what Lake-Sumter's protocol is, how/if it would differ from Boston, etc. I'll have to ask friends with the agency. I do know that there are mini-refrigerators on the trucks now to keep the fluids and drugs cooled. I haven't heard of any other providers down here who are doing it.

Apparently this was an initiative of the new medical director and all the local hospitals are on board. Also don't know if they have used it enough yet to analyze data on outcomes, i.e. patients discharged from the hospital with no neurological deficits.
